Now that I’ve been playing with Pownce for a day, I’m starting to come to some conclusions about how it can exist in the current world of Twitter and Jaiku, considering the similar interface.
In a perfect world… Twitter and Pownce can co-exist. Here’s how: Twitter will continue to ask the question, what are you doing? It will be a simple way to post your current status, what’s going on in your life, your mood, all of that. Pownce can then take the place of contacting your friends, sharing files, links, and events. Assuming this is the case, the volume of posts per day on Pownce would be much lower than Twitter, and that would be a good thing.
What will probably happen… People will use Pownce in exaclty the same way they use Twitter. Every blog post they write, every somewhat interesting site they see, and every bowel movement they make will be posted. And with the format that Pownce uses, it’s just going to be a headache.
I really hope I can be proven wrong. I want Pownce to be a useful tool for sharing important information and files. I really like the interface, the design, and the whole idea. I guess the easiest way to make sure this happens is to quickly filter any friends that start using it for spam purposes. Also use the grouping features, to make sure that your message go off to right people. If you want to post something for everyone, just make it public, rather than sending a message to all your friends every time, and filling their inbox with unnecessary junk. Just today I had 27 emails from Pownce, about messages intended for everyone. That’s a quick way to turn someone off of the service…
Start the Pownce etiquette off right. Then when it’s open to the public, maybe everyone will start to have a good idea of how to use it.
been a little while since i have been here. i really like the new layout. good job. And yes i agree with what you are saying about Pownce.
Good point Matt. I am excited to start using pownce to see what the hype is.
(you have been del.ici.ou.us and dugged))
i think differently about it, new to it as i am. i see it as a combination of twitter/jaiku and the visual aggregation of tumblr, in a functional interface. i see it as vastly extending twiiter/jaiku and creating a more dynamic sort of tumblr experience. i’d love to see a pownce widget for my blog, for instance; i would instantly create a group for the classes i teach and create that sort of interaction (blog for straightup content, pownce for everything else) as a built-in.
but air’s offline capabilities are what i like best. just the oldtimer talking.
I think this problem can be solved if Pownce adds instant messaging functionality. The ability to add my aim, icq, msn, gtalk, whatever account to contact my friends quickly to give a quick message would pretty much seal the deal for me with Pownce.
most of what you say… The ability to group your friends list
aCommanders called out orders to aim anti-aircraft guns at the suspected source of hostile fire.
“Allahu Akbar!,” rebels shouted. They put up a brave face, but fear was evident.
“This is no game, this is serious,” said a rebel called Ahmed, carrying an ammunition belt, who sought cover on the floor.
I am a student and read your comments make me very is benefit.
