I was as excited as anyone that Apple finally came out with the Touch Screen iPod we’ve all been waiting for for so long. Even though I have an iPhone already, I knew it’d mean new features and I know a lot of iPhone hold outs who wanted everything but the phone.
But what’s this mean now for web designers? A lot more people are going to be viewing the web with Safari, at a resolution of 320×480. While Apple claims “this isn’t the mobile” internet, it still isn’t exactly like bringing a laptop with you everywhere. I still would much rather view an iPhone optimized site (iphone.facebook anyone?) than go to a site like Engadget or TechCrunch (I think they’re trying to blow my iPhone with all those ads and widgets….)
As more and more people begin experiencing the internet on a small screen, I think we’re going to be seeing a more sites specifically for the iPhone/iPod show up. As a web designer, I’d say get ready to be doing two version of sites for a little while. So far I haven’t seen a site that looks awesome on both a big and a small screen. I’m interested to see what kind of solutions everyone will have though. There’s a lot of opportunity here.
