You ever hear a song over and over, constantly have that thought “hey, that’s a good song,” but never act on it? Walking into a store with it playing in the background. Sitting in a coffee shop, listening to it behind conversation. Seeing it on several commercials without consciously connecting it in your mind.
I try to follow through on most of these things. It drives me insane otherwise. But there was a song that I have been crossing paths with for the last year, and I finally tracked it down today.
It started in a Dangerdoom song. It was used as a sample for the song “Old School.” I always thought it was a great loop, but never looked it up. Then it showed up again while watching Kill Bill, as the intro music. More recently, I remember hearing it as someone’s ringtone. Those are just the moments I can pin down. It’s come up many other times. I finally decided I had to pin it down when watching Death Proof a few days ago. Again, Tarantino used it as intro music for the film.
So I started looking it up. Googling “sample song old school dangerdoom” didn’t come up with much though. I tried different variations, and again, nothing. I finally did come up with it though, after searching for “kill bill intro music” and ending up on a youtube video.
I made my way through a comment thread, and found a link to Funky Fanfare by Keith Mansfield
I love moments like this. It’s like the first time you come across the amen break. Very satisfying.
starbucks is trying to put an end to this, with their lookup system for iphone. not quite as specific as finding a sample source, but definitely helpful.
