I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny Cupcakes come speak at SCAD last night. If you’ve never heard of him, he makes clothing with cupcakes on them. He’s not a baker.
I’ve known about Mr. Cupcakes for a while now. Growing up in Massachusetts and being fully involved in the local hardcore scene, it was pretty difficult not to know about Johnny Cupcakes. But after hearing his whole story, I have to say, his strategy, understanding of branding and marketing, and attention to detail is amazing. His ability to make the name Johnny Cupcakes stick in your head is incredible, whether it’s sending seemingly random objects in your packages of clothing, building his Newbury Street store to look like a bakery, printing hidden messages in shirts, or building a McDonalds style ball pit in his home, it’s hard not to talk about him and his pastry covered shirts after seeing any of it.
If you’d like to read his whole story, from touring with On Broken Wings, to selling cupcakes out of the back of his car, to being ripped off by Urban Outfitters, and watching his loyal friends and fans respond, go read a little bit. and google the guy!
Oh, and he left us a few little prizes during the lecture.
