I’ll start by saying that I feel like this post shouldn’t have to be written. It shouldn’t have to be written because in a perfect world we wouldn’t have this problem. But we don’t spend our days in a utopia, and we do have a few issues left to deal with. The problem I speak of today though… Ringtones. Not the standard sound of your phone ringing, no, but songs you’ve downloaded into your phone specifically to ruin everyone else’s day. And I don’t care what song it is. It’s cruel and unusual.
I won’t just tell you that I hate them though. That would be immature. Instead I’ve collected some reasons. Some support for my argument that ringtones should not exist, and anyone who believes otherwise should be asked kindly to leave what we know as society.
1. They sound horrible coming out of your speakers. It doesn’t matter what song it is. It sounds like the song is trapped in a tin can covered in duct tape, and using it’s dying breath to scream for help. Not pleasant.
2. You enjoy your ringtone way too much! I’ve actually sat around and watched so-called friends listen to a ringtone all the way through and miss the actual phone call. Not only does it defeat the purpose of signaling that your phone it ringing. It’s just looping 30 seconds of your favorite song! Not even the whole thing!
3. We all have to hear it over and over and over and over… I don’t care what song you’ve selected. Pretty much any song ever written, after being heard enough times, will make you want to die. If you don’t believe me, try it some time. Just don’t ever subject anyone else to it without their consent.
4. They cost more money than the actual song! You could buy the entire song for $.99, and you’re paying $2-3 for a ringtone! I know this doesn’t effect me, but you’re using your dollar to tell anyone selling ringtones that that’s okay. You should be ashamed.
5. Even if I only have to hear the song once, you’ve probably picked a terrible song. I’m sorry to break the news to you, but it’s true. No one wants to hear your Panic at the Disco ringer. Hopefully you won’t either in 2 to 3 weeks.
If I’ve missed any key reasons, feel free to chime in. I just had to get that off my chest. Hopefully this will inspire you to stop with the ringtone songs, and just let your phone ring like a phone should. Ring ring!
I used to like having ringtones, but they are just too annoying any more. People don’t have common sense… or courtesy when they have ringtones. When you go into a business, turn your phone to vibrate or at least the lowest ringer setting and don’t answer it in line. Same thing applies when you’re at work. I’m the only one who turns my phone down at work (1 other person has his on vibrate… but that’s how he has it all the time). The others leave theirs on the highest volume, but they are standard tones that came with the phones at least.
I have two phones a Motorola Razr V3 (Cingular) and a Samsung SCH-u540 (Verizon). Ringtones sound terrible through their speakers (all except two on the Razr that I created them from actual songs). I have a few music ringtones on my Samsung but I only use one as an actual ringtone (for a certain person). The others are loud and I use them only for alarms (in the morning).
There are two things far worse than ringtones though. Ringback tones and speaker phone. I’ve never understood the point of a ringback tone as most cover up rings, so you don’t know if it’s rang two times or ten. Speaker phone and those phones with the push-to-talk feature are one of my biggest annoyances. I’ve been in a nice restaurant and had someone sitting at another table talking to his wife using one of the push-to-talk phones, there’s 10 minutes of my life that I would of liked to have back.
Amen, even though I already have a few ringtones on my phone. I really resent my roommate’s ringtones, because she has had this Rascal Flatts one for about two months, and it drives me up the wall when I hear her text messages. Sometimes she just leaves it on over night and it always plays, and she sleeps right through it! And then when she doesn’t answer her phone, it makes a beep every 15 minutes. It’s a Motorola Razr, and I loathe it!!
At least I change mine, because I create my own ringtones. But yeah, pretty much mine are less annoying. And I barely have people call me, anyways.
I had a sped up version of Raffi’s Banaphone on mine for a while, as a parody of all the bad tincanny ringtones my coworkers had.
“RING RING RING RING RING RING RING BANANAPHONE!”
It backfired because I was constantly on call the entire time I had that ringtone so the song would wake me up at 3am. Now I can’t hear it at all without involuntarily twitching.
Yea I hated my ringtone for the whole two years of my phone contract, and to this day I don’t know why I didn’t bother to change it. Probably because I didn’t want a song to blast out on me when I got a call. I don’t understand why we have to buy ring tones that are songs or as pointed out 30 seconds of a song. Only interesting ringtone site I have found is uniqtones.com or some that are already on the phone! Oh yea I’ve got a new phone now so will change ringtone, ha ha!

posted on Oct 10, 12:22 AMUgh, I hate ringtones too. I’m glad some of the hype is dying down. I remember when every dead-tree newspaper and magazine was touting them as the revolutionary future of the music industry, sorry but no.
The samples used for ringtones sound like they were chopped up by a deaf person using sound edit 16 for their first time. They’re really atrocious, and I always cringe when I hear of someone paying ridiculous prices for 20secs of a song’s chorus. Crazy-talk.
On the other hand, have you noticed how hard it is to come up with a cool ringtone? My phone right now has Alouette as its ringtone simply because I randomly selected it from the ones my phone came with. It sounds terrible, but it makes me pick up my phone FAST. In the past I’ve spent time splicing up and making ringtones myself when I come across a song that actually lends itself to being a ringtone, but there aren’t a ton of those, and lately I just haven’t had the time to make it sound cool.
